STATE OF CONNECTICUT ISSUES NEW 2018
ELEVATOR CODE REGULATIONS
The state of Connecticut has adopted the ASME A17.1 2013 Safety Code for Elevators on January 4, 2018. This code incorporates a significant number of changes when compared to the previous code.
Single Bottom Cylinders
All hydraulic single bottom cylinder elevators, where the cylinder is installed below ground, shall either have the cylinder replaced, safeties installed or an installation of a plunger gripper. This requirement does not pertain to cylinders which were installed with a safety bulkhead. Sec. 8.6.5.8
Secondary Braking System
All operational changes to traction elevators will require that a secondary braking mechanism be installed to mitigate uncontrolled motion in the up direction. The most common forms are a rope gripper or the addition of a disk brake. Future modernization work will need to accommodate this change and be included in the scope of work. Certain applications may require an application to the state for a variance or the installation of new elevator machines all together.
Hydraulic Over-Speed Valve
Shall be inspected and tested with full load as required in the Periodic Test Requirement of a category 5 test or if the seal has been altered or broken. Sec. 8.6.5.16
Rupture Valve Testing
As a part of the 2013 code all hydraulic elevators with rupture valves now require a full load test to be completed every five years. Under most standard contracts, these tests fall outside of the scope of your maintenance agreement. Otis will be providing proposals to complete this work shortly.
