Always Check Your Rigging and Hoisting

One of the most important aspects of the elevator trade is safety involving rigging and hoisting. The following occurred on a job-site. An elevator mechanic noticed that one of the nuts securing the hoisting sheave in the snatch block fell down the hoistway while he was hoisting a controller up 14 floors. The crew safely landed the controller, and then immediately stopped work. The supervisor and safety manager were contacted and coordinated communications with the snatch block manufacturer to remedy the issue. Fortunately no one was injured while using the faulty equipment, but this could have resulted in a life altering injury or fatality.

Safety Points to Focus on:

  • Never position yourself under a load.
  • Continuously check your hoisting and rigging equipment.
  • Never exceed the manufacturer specifications of a piece of equipment.
