Project Scope

During the fall of 2017 we received the opportunity to put together an elevator modernization package to upgrade the elevators in the “A” Wing of Saratoga Hospital. The goal of the project was to conform to current life safety code, ADA code, and improve the overall efficiency of the equipment. To achieve this goal we proposed a plan that would replace all controls, wiring, landing systems, fixtures, door operation, AC hoist motors, and ACVF drives. We felt that this specific scope of work would represent a valuable investment in the hospital’s elevators, and as a consequence it would greatly improve reliability, performance, ride quality, energy efficiency, while reducing liability exposure.

The new equipment would consist of a highly efficient AC hoist motor. This motor would be a VVVF drive, the alternating current provides an energy efficient, high performing elevator system. In addition a rope gripper would be provided for each elevator. The rope gripper is an ascending care safety that is a vital part of improving the safety of the current elevator system. The brains behind the efficiency upgrades would be regulated by a new micro-processor controller with VVVF drives. This controller would contain all current code required services and allow the hospital easy access in any situation. The new controller would include a hoistway position control system and an onboard service tool that allows diagnostics and adjustments. Micro-processor controllers are reliable, efficient and easily adjusted control systems that provide immediate improvement to passenger traffic and performance of elevator systems. The controller also includes an auto fan/light shutdown which would turn of the fan and lights after a pre-determined amount of time. This is a very useful energy savings feature.

From an aesthetics standpoint new car and hall fixtures would be replaced with new, code and ADA compliant Vandal Resistant fixtures. These include all required call buttons and travel indicators required by code. A state of the art ADA compliant pushbutton phone would be installed in each new elevator cab to make communication easy between passengers and response staff. All fixtures would include LED bulbs which provide long life and are very energy efficient.

Elevator Installation

We were very fortunate to be selected to execute our proposed scope of work at the hospital. After we were awarded the project we immediately performed a detailed site survey and began ordering all necessary equipment. Procuring all necessary equipment lasted a few months and we were ready to begin installation during Q1 of 2018.

Saratoga Hospital staff was extremely accommodating during the installation process and Bay State Elevator mechanics wrapped up the modernization that spring.

Results

Upon completion of the elevator modernization the equipment was promptly turned over to the hospital for full use. These upgrades show an excellent investment into the hospital’s infrastructure and Saratoga Hospital’s commitment to offering elite patient care.
